What drew you to this play?
I saw the original TV broadcast back in 1977 (showing my age there!) and loved it then – TV drama was brilliant in the seventies! When the rights became available, I rushed at it, and luckily, the Players popped it in the season
How would you describe your vision for the production?
I absolutely hate the over-used word “iconic” but there’s not too much that can be done to impose a new vision on it, but I do hope that some of the choices we have made give a slightly fiercer vision than some versions I’ve seen
What’s been the biggest challenge in directing this play?
Getting the timing of the poptastic 70s music right!
Have there been any standout moments in rehearsals that made you especially proud?
Many – when this fine group of actors really take flight and make the performances their own, when they surprise me with something that I know audiences will love
How do you approach working with actors to bring out their best performances?
I’ve always been fairly free and collaborative with casts; I’m not really an A-to-B director. I love them to come up with their own ideas, and this has been happening here. Lots of “backstories” for the characters, lots of playing and creativity.
Are there any unexpected elements or creative choices in this production that audiences might not expect?
Hopefully! I won’t give too much away.
What do you think makes this play particularly relevant or special for audiences today?
Oh goodness yes – the rise of credit-card consumerism, the one-upmanship of typical suburban life, the lack of empathy for others, the bullying – I could go on but don’t want to get too political!
What’s one behind-the-scenes fact about this production people might not know?
It wouldn’t happen at all if not for the dedication and hard work of everyone backstage!
If you could direct any play next, what would it be?
I’ve got a long list – “Exit The King”, “The Cane”, “It’s True, It’s True, It’s True” – but in the short term, I am launching a new low-key folklore-based project – Pitchfork Theatre for new writing
In one sentence, why should people come and see this production?
It’s a wonderful piece; thought-provoking drama and at the same time very very funny – a real treat for us as creatives and the audience too! A great break from the Xmas shopping – Saturday matinee is a great excuse not to go to town!
