Victorian drama takes centre stage at the Barn Theatre
Rehearsals are in full swing at Southwick Players as the cast brings Dickens’ timeless tale Great Expectations to life. The production, adapted for the stage by Richard Lindfield, runs 9–12 July at The Barn Theatre, Southwick, including a Saturday matinee.
A compelling story of ambition, loyalty, and love, Great Expectations is more than just a classic novel. It’s a Victorian moral tale that reminds us that affection and conscience outweigh social climbing and wealth.
The cast is already deep in character
Early glimpses of the rehearsals promise an atmospheric and heartfelt production.
Neil Drew and Lewis Todhunter give a powerful performance as Herbert Pocket and Pip, with Neil’s line, “And now all I know about Miss Havisham, you know,” giving us a taste of the mystery and intrigue at the heart of the play.
Meanwhile, the formidable legal team of Jaggers (Peter Jukes) and Wemmick (Frank Horsley) offer a stern reminder not to be deceived by appearances. Pip, played by Lewis Todhunter, finds himself under their scrutiny as he navigates his transformation from humble beginnings to the world of “great expectations.” And as for the complex relationship between Pip and Magwitch…!
There’s a touching moment too, between Pip and his father figure Joe, played by Steven Emery, who brings warmth and honesty to the role. The emotional line, “God bless you, dear old Pip, old chap, God bless you,” delivers a poignant nod to the heart of the story; a tale grounded in loyalty and love.
With a talented cast and beautifully crafted direction, this is shaping up to be one of Southwick Players’ most powerful productions yet.
