Want to play your part in this iconic Christie thriller? Time to get your show pack…
Southwick Players is delighted to announce auditions for their April 2026 production of Murder on the Nile, directed by Robert Tremayne. Agatha Christie’s tense, sun-drenched whodunnit unfolds aboard a luxurious paddle steamer travelling up the Nile — where jealousy, betrayal and simmering resentments lead to murder.
First performed in 1944 (and adapted by Christie herself from her novel Death on the Nile), this stage version remains one of her most atmospheric and tightly written plays.
This production will lean into the glamour and danger of 1930s Egypt, combining stylish character work with a strong sense of unease beneath the surface. Tremayne will work from the full script, bringing a sharp, character-driven approach that encourages actors to create detailed, truthful performances rather than merely echoing the film adaptations.
The story:
As the paddle steamer Lotus departs, the newlywed honeymoon of Kay Ridgeway and her husband, Simon Mostyn, is overshadowed by Kay’s former friend Jacqueline, who is following them on their journey. Tensions rise among the eclectic mix of passengers, each harbouring secrets of their own. When a shocking murder shatters the tranquillity, everyone becomes a suspect, and every motive is suddenly in play.
A rich ensemble of roles with depth, humour and complexity:
- Kay Ridgeway-Mostyn (20s–30s). Wealthy, poised, intelligent, determined. Used to getting what she wants but far from naïve.
- Simon Mostyn (20s–30s).Charming, confident and impulsive, with a boyish quality masking deeper flaws.
- Jacqueline de Severac (20s–30s). Passionate, volatile, emotional. A magnetic presence whose heartbreak drives the drama.
- Canon Pennefather (40s–60s). Warm, worldly, sharp-witted. A keen observer of human nature and the closest thing the play has to a detective.
- Christina Grant (20s–30s).Kay’s cousin; excitable, enthusiastic and genuinely kind. A beacon of optimism.
- Dr Bessner (40s–60s). A European doctor with a meticulous nature and a calm authority.
- Louise (20s–40s). Kay’s maid; poised, distant, carrying private grievances.
- Helen was Ffoliot-Ffoulkes(40s–60s). Forceful, aristocratic, self-assured. A woman used to being in control.
- William Smith (30s–50s). A socialist with dry humour and a grounded worldview. Often the sharpest commentator in the room.
- Steward (any)
- Beadseller/Crew
- McNaught/Beadseller/Crew (varied ages). Featured appearances requiring presence, agility and character detail.
- (Exact casting age ranges may flex based on auditionees.)
